Since Morris Levy, the owner of Roulette, was also the owner of several nightclubs in New York
(including Birdland), it was a natural for him to get the jazz musicians to record for Roulette. As one
might expect, the lineup was strong, with Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson, and even Duke Ellington and
Louis Armstrong. The 52000 "Birdland" Series ran from late 1957 to 1968, and used an album cover
logo with a line drawing of a bird beside it (see above).
The first six albums were released in late December, 1957, and reviewed in Billboard in the New
Years' week edition, January 6, 1958. We have tried to pin down release dates for the albums in the
52000 Birdland series, assuming their review was about two to three weeks after release, which is fairly
typical. Some albums take longer to be reviewed, so some release dates may be a month earlier than
indicated. For researchers, we have included the Billboard review date as well as our estimate of
the month/year released.
In 1966, Roulette started a two-LP set series with the K/SK-100 series, which only lasted for eight
releases. They later revised the series in 1971 as the RE-100 "Echoes of an Era" series, which was
generally a jazz series, but had a few "Echoes of a Rock Era" volumes included. In 1975, they
started a short (10 releases) SR-5000 jazz series. All these series are covered on this page.
The Birdland Jazz series started in late 1957 with the white label (far left). The first dozen or so releases were mono only, with some of the issues getting a stereo version some time later. Promotional copies of all of the labels here are the same as shown on Part 2. The white label was used from 52001 to 52083. In summer, 1962, the label changed to the orange and pink design shown at near left. This label was used until the start of 1964, from 52084 to 52103.
From 52104 to 52124, the label was the orange and yellow "checkerboard" roulette wheel design shown at far left. Most of these labels had black print for the song titles, as shown. Some labels like the one shown at near left used green print for the song titles. The K/SK-100 series and the RS-5000 series used these labels also.
Album RK/SRK-103 used a Royal Roost label as shown at far left. The label at near left was used by Roulette in the 1980s, but many of the RE-100 albums were reissued in the 1980s with this label. |
