Smash Album Discography

Continued from The Smash Records Story....

The Smash album labels were all variations on one another. All were a red-orange color with black print, with the Smash logo at the top. The first labels had a large logo on both mono and stereo. Earliest albums (far left) had small print around the top of the label which read: "Distributed by MERCURY RECORD CORPORATION, Chicago, U.S.A." Later (near left), the fine print was around the bottom of the label: "Smash Records - Vendor: Mercury Record Corporation."
Still later, the logo was smaller on both mono and stereo labels, as shown at left. The fine print remained around the bottom of the label on some issues (far left), but was omitted on others (near left).
By the late 1960s, a new logo was used which had not only the Smash name but also Mercury, the parent company. Regular commercial labels were the usual red-orange, while promotional labels such as shown at near left were yellow with black print, with "PROMOTIONAL COPY - NOT FOR SALE" around the bottom of the label..
Occasionally, the labels would also include the logo of a production company such as Dunwich (as shown at far left). The 1980s revival of the Smash imprint by PolyGram used the label shown at near left.

The wide true stereo mix discussed below may have also been issued with this cover, but we don't have the matrix number for that one.
