Gone Label Album Discography
By Mike Callahan, David Edwards, and Bob Hyde

It's clear from the first dozen albums issued on this label that it was to be Goldner's jazz outlet (as in, "real gone, man.") Some of the rock and roll groups eventually showed up on the label's singles, culminating with the wonderful Ral Donner album as the first – and last – rock and roll album for the label.

Goldner released a dozen jazz albums on the label before the Ral Donner album. George Goldner was well known as a fan of Latin music (starting such classic Latin labels as Tico), but it is less known that in 1959, he preserved some of the Cuban music on his Gone Latin series. He released four albums of Cuban music just after Fidel Castro took over Cuba and cut off the easy access to the recordings, then one more Latin album in the series two years later.

There were some known stereo album issues on this label (see notes below). The Ral Donner material was originally issued in mono only, but began being reissued in stereo in the 1980s. Bob Hyde, who was head of the tiny Murray Hill label (a division of Random House Books, for whom Hyde worked), said he was running the label out of an office the size of a broom closet. He wanted to put out a reissue of the Orioles' music, but it was owned by Morris Levy of Roulette, who had a reputation of being hard to deal with. After looking up Roulette's address, Bob Hyde found that it was mere blocks from his office, so he decided to walk over one day and see what he could arrange.

He described his first meeting with Levy as something out of a grade-B gangster movie. Levy was sitting high up behind a desk, and Hyde was invited to sit down in a chair in front of the desk – a chair whose legs had been shortened. Several "tough guy" types were with Levy and they laughed in unison every time Levy laughed. As strange as the meeting was, Hyde said that for some reason Levy seemed to like him, and made him a deal to license the Orioles' catalog (noting that the deal was in no way advantageous to Hyde, but he really wanted to do the reissue). Thus began a series of licenses to Murray Hill, until finally Levy told his warehouse foreman to let Hyde in and give him the run of the place so he could find the tapes he wanted to license.

With this freedom, and bringing along his friend Little Walter Devenne from Boston, the two began finding long lost stereo recordings, many never before issued. In 1988, an LP appeared on Murray Hill Records which had the first-time stereo for several Ral Donner songs. Due to a mastering error, many of the songs had little separation, however. The later CD reissues in stereo were much better in terms of sound and separation. The most comprehensive CD set was the 1991 2-CD set from Sequel in England called The Complete Ral Donner, 1959-1962 [Sequel NED CD 190], for which Bob Hyde did the liner notes and discography and Walter Devenne did the reissue production. Although "Girl Of My Best Friend" is mono on that CD (and all others), it features "I Didn't Figure On Him," "She's Everything," "You Don't Know What You've Got." and others in stereo, including an alternate stereo take of "(What A Sad Way) To Love Someone" that is different only in the spoken bridge.

The first Gone label, issued in 1958 for GLP-101, was black with silver print, with the Gone logo at the top (far left). In 1959, the label changed color to a deep red, with the same design (center left). Reissues of GLP-101 also have this red label, as do most releases on in the 5000 and 7000 series. By 1961, the label changed to a red label with eight "petals" radiating out from the center in alternating gold and pink colors (near left). This label was used for LP 5012 and GL 7005.

SELECTED RELATED LPs:

RONDO (Holland)
RLP 22 437 - Takin' Care of Business, Vol. 2 - Ral Donner [197?] An interesting and probably unauthorized LP, this features the same cover as Gone LP 5012, with the original label and number rather crudely erased and the new number printed over it. It features the original liner notes on the back. The jacket and record are typical of those pressed in Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Orange label with black print and no graphics. All tracks are mono. In addition to the other Gone sides not included on Gone LP-5012, this also includes some songs from the Scottie and Reprise labels. Run Little Linda [Reprise 20192]/Beyond The Heartbreak [Reprise 20192]/I Wish This Night Would Never End [Reprise 20176]/Don't Put Your Heart In His Hand [Reprise 20176]/(What A Sad Way) To Love Someone [Gone 5125]/Will You Love Me In Heaven [Gone 5121/5125]/Sweetheart [Gone 5133]/To Love [Gone 5108/5133]//I Got Burned [Reprise 20141]/A Tear In My Eye [Reprise 20141]/It's Been A Long Long Time [Gone 5102]/Girl Of My Best Friend [Gone 5102]/Bells Of Love [Gone 5129]/Tell Me Why [Scottie 1310]/That's All Right With Me [Scottie 1310]

STAR FIRE
SLP-1004 - An Evening with Ral Donner - Ral Donner [1982] Although the title of this album implies it is recorded live, instead it is a collection of obscure recordings Ral has made over the years. The back cover gives the city and year they were recorded. Although some pressings are regular black vinyl, most of the early pressings were on multi-colored vinyl (see right). All tracks mono. Loneliness Of A Star (Orlando, FL, 1960)/And Then (Alternate Version) (Orlando, FL, 1960)/Life To Live Over (Chicago, IL, 1963)/Lost (Chicago, IL, 1968)/Rip It Up (Nashville, TN, 1979)//Don't Leave Me Now (Nashville, TN, 1979)/The Wedding Song (Chicago, IL, 1974)/Godfather Per Me (Chicago, IL, 1974)/So Much Lovin' (Chicago, IL, 1974)/Moments (Chicago, IL, 1971)

WESTSIDE (UK)
WESD 206 - The Gone Story - Various Artists [1999] 2-CD set. Good retrospective of the Gone label. And no, that's not a misprint near the end of disc two: The song is "Little Eva" by the group "The Locomotions" [Gone 5142], released in March, 1963, almost a year after "Locomotion" by Little Eva. A doo-wop group from Copiague, NY, with a sense of humor and hoping, no doubt, for a little mistaken reading of the label. The group later recorded as the Lost Souls. CANADIAN (Boot)
241 - Rip it Up: 27 Rockin' Hits - Ral Donner [1999] Ral Donner had a long and prolific recording career after his relatively short chart career. After a slew of hits on the Gone label in 1961-62, he moved to Reprise and had one song ("I Got Burned") scrape into the Bubbling Under charts in 1963, and that was it for chart hits. This collection contains singles from Ral's post-Gone days, including singles on the Reprise, Fontana/Smash, M.J., Red Bird, Mid Eagle, Rising Sons, and Starfire labels. Obviously, the CD title uses the term "hits" rather loosely, but you gotta give Ral credit for not giving up. And if you liked his Gone material, he didn't sound much different twenty years later. Rip It Up (M)/Beyond The Heartbreak (M)/Good Lovin' (M)/All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings (S)/I Got Burned (M)/The Greatest Moments In My Life (M, distorted)/Take Me Back (M)/Don't Leave Me Now (M)/Poison Ivy League (M)/The Other Side Of You (M)/Run Little Linda (M)/It'll Only Make Me Love You More (M)/If You Love Him (M, noisy)/So Much Lovin' (M)/Lost (M)/Just A Little Sunshine In The Rain (M)/(If I Had My) Life To Live Over (M)/Lovin' Place (S)/I Wish This Night Would Never End (M)/A Tear In My Eye (M)/Love Isn't Like That (M)/You Finally Said Something Good (M)/Don't Put Your Heart In His Hands (M)/If I Promise (M)/The Wedding Song (M)/The Things That Make Up Christmas Day (M)/The Second Miracle (M)
