Bobby Robinson's Labels: Album Discographies
By David Edwards and Mike Callahan

Bobby Robinson owned a record shop in New York City. He established many record labels in the '50s and '60s. On some he was the sole owner, on others he was in partnership with his brother Danny Robinson or others. Among them were Red Robin Records, established in 1952 (Bobby and Danny), Whirlin' Disc Records, established in 1956 (Bobby), Fury Records, established in 1957 (Bobby), Everlast Records, established in 1957 (Bobby and Danny), Fire Records, established in 1959 (Bobby), Revelation Records, established in 1959 (Bobby, John Bowden and Clarence Lewis) and Enjoy Records, established in 1962 (Bobby and Danny).

Bobby Robinson was a pivotal figure in the history of black music. Bobby (shown at right in his store in his later years, courtesy of the New York Times) was born in Union, South Carolina, on April 16, 1917, and served in the US Army in World War II. After the war, he went to New York City and established Bobby's Record Shop in 1946. The store was the first black-owned business on 125th Street in Harlem. Local musicians congregated in his record shop and Bobby became interested in recording and making records. He established the Robin (later Red Robin) label in 1951. His first record was "Bobby's Boogie" by Morris Lane's Band, but he soon began concentrating on what today is known as doo wop. He recorded local groups including the Du Droppers, Vocaleers, Mello-Moods and the Rainbows. The records were successful in the New York City area and these doo wop records are some of the most prized records of the genre. Bobby went on to establish many other record labels and soon enjoyed national success.

Red Robin and Whirlin' Disc recorded mostly vocal group rhythm and blues music. Originally, Fury was established as a record label and Fire was to be the publishing arm. When Bobby Robinson issued "Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison in March, 1959, it was a sensation and went to the top of the singles charts. At the height of this success, Robinson was sued by Savoy Records who, unknown to Bobby, had Wilbert Harrison under a 5 year contract that was to expire in August 1959. Because Fury was tied up in litigation, Robinson began releasing material on the Fire Record label. The litigation lasted until September, 1959, and prevented Robinson from issuing any follow-up Wilbert Harrison records while he was so hot.

Fire Records became known as a blues label and issued albums by Lightnin' Hopkins, Buster Brown and Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup. Bobby Robinson made occasional forays into New Orleans where he recorded Lee Dorsey and Bobby Marchan.

The Revelation label was the Bobby Robinson gospel label. It operated from 1959 to 1962. Revelation Records was operated by Bobby Robinson, John Bowden and Clarence "Fats" Lewis (see business card at right). It was located at 271 West 125th Street in New York City with the Fire and Fury labels. John Bowden was a gospel record producer and promotion man. Most of the singles on this label indicate John Bowden Productions where a producer is mentioned.

The biggest hits produced by Robinson were "Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison which sold over 2 million records, with "Fannie Mae" by Buster Brown and "Ya Ya" by Lee Dorsey both selling over one million records. In addition to these artists, he also had hits with Elmore James (some of his best work), Gladys Knight and the Pips (their first recordings), Lewis Lymon and the Teen Chords, Bobby Marchan, King Curtis, Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford, and Les Cooper.

Robinson leased the music from his labels Fire, Fury, and Revelation to Bell records in 1965. Bell reissued much of it on their Sphere Sound subsidiary label.

Bobby Robinson continued to issue records into the 1980s. Amazingly, in the late 70s he produced the first hip hop records by recording Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, issuing the group's records on his Enjoy label. Robinson continued to operate his record shop until it closed on January 21, 2008. He died at age 93 on January 17, 2011.

Of the many labels, only Fire, Fury, Everlast, Enjoy and Revelation issued albums and are covered in the following album discographies. We have also included a singles discography for the multiple labels owned by Robinson. As for stereo, the entire stereo story has only been heard on CD. The Robinsons' labels boasted "The Ultimate in Monaural Sound," and we know of no stereo issues on Fire, Fury, Enjoy, Everlast or Revelation (with the exception of some post-1970 singles). The Sphere Sound LPs were mono also (although some albums were reissued in electronic stereo). It was only in the 1990s, when Little Walter DeVenne obtained the original multitracks from Bobby Robinson, that the material began being issued in true stereo on the Relic label. For that reason, several CD issues are appended to this discography to illustrate the many songs recorded in stereo.

The first Fire label (far left) was white with red print, FIRE at the top in white surrounded by red flames. The second Fire label (near left) was red with black print, FIRE at the top in red surrounded by black flames.
The Fury label (far left) was yellow with black printing. A horse logo is coming out of a tornado which starts at the center of the record. The Enjoy label (near left) was gold with blue print.
The first Everlast label (far left) was orange with black print, with the Everlast name on the top. The second Everlast label was orange and white, with the Everlast name written vertically down the left side.
The Revelation label (far left) was purple with silver print, with the label name in block letters at the top. At near left is Bell Records' subsidiary Sphere Sound label. Many of the Sphere Sound albums were reissues of Fire-Fury-Revelation-Enjoy-Everlast material.

FLP-101 - Buster Brown...New King Of The Blues - Buster Brown [1960, Unissued] Although this album was prepared to be issued as Fire FLP-101, and discs with labels were pressed, this album was temporarily shelved due to slow initial sales of "Fannie Mae." After preparing a second album, by Elmore James, to be numbered Fire FLP-102 (see below), "Fannie Mae" took off and Bobby Robinson decided to pull back the Elmore James album and reissue the Buster Brown album as Fire FLP-102 instead. Label is white with red printing, with FLP-101 in the trail off area of LP. Covers would probably be the same as the eventual first issue on FLP-102, but with a FLP-101 number on the jacket. Fannie Mae/John Henry/Madison/St. Louis Blues/When Things Go Wrong/Lost In A Dream//Is You Is Or Is You Ain't/Don't Dog Your Woman/Blue Berry Hill/Sincerely/I'm Goin' But I'll Be Back

FLP-102 - The Sky Is Crying - Elmo James & His Screamin' Guitar [1960, Unissued] Just as Bobby Robinson was getting ready to release Elmore James' The Sky is Crying album as LP- 102, "Fannie Mae" by Buster Brown had gotten so big, that he just dropped the Elmore James LP to concentrate on the Buster Brown album and released it as FLP-102. There had been a few early copies of the Elmore James LP pressed up already but no cover was ever printed. Somebody found a copy at a flea market in NJ and John Tefteller bought the album for $5,000. Bobby Robinson told Tefteller that he made no covers and stopped production of this LP before making a cover and only pressing some samples of the record itself. Sphere Sound later reissued this as SSE 7002 (Adding "Standing at the Crossroads" as the sixth cut on side 2). The Sky Is Crying/Dust My Broom/I Held My Baby/Fine Little Mama/Bobby's Rock/Can't Stop Lovin' You//Done Somebody Wrong/Rollin' And Tumblin'/I Need You Baby/Something Inside Me/I'm Worried

FLP-102 - The New King Of The Blues - Buster Brown [1961] Cover is white with a photo of Buster Brown. First copies used up the pressed-up discs that were to be used for FLP-101 (see above), with a white label numbered FLP-101, with a jacket numbered FLP-102. Later copies used the red label with black printing. FLP-101 is etched trail off area of the red-label LP even though the cover and label say FLP-102. Fannie Mae/John Henry/Madison/St. Louis Blues/When Things Go Wrong/Lost In A Dream//Is You Is Or Is You Ain't/Don't Dog Your Woman/Blue Berry Hill/Sincerely/I'm Goin' But I'll Be Back

FLP-102 - New King Of The Blues - Buster Brown [1961] Cover is blue with drawing of Buster Brown.

FLP-103 - Mean Ol' Frisco - Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup [1962] Label is red with black printing. Although the cover has the title as "Mean Ol' Frisco," both the label and the back cover give the title as "Mean Ole Frisco," which matches the spelling of the title track on the album. Mean Ole Frisco/Look On Yonder Wall/That's Alright [Remake of 1940s recording "That's All Right (Mama)"]/Ethel Mae/Too Much Competition/Standing At My Window//Rock Me, Mama/Greyhound Bus/Coal Black Mare/Katie Mae/Dig Myself A Hole/So Glad You're Mine
