In late 1958, Mercury announced the issue of the first 24 stereo albums, numbered with a new
series starting with SR 60000. The "SR" was probably short for "stereo record," just as the "MG" prefix
on
the mono albums was short for "microgroove." All 24 of the albums were reissues of albums that
Mercury had recently released in mono. Although all 24 were announced at once, not all made it to the
stores in 1958; a few were issued in early 1959 and one in 1960.
The stereo records on this page all used the original stereo label (far left), with the oval Mercury logo and large "STEREO" lettering around the top edge of the label, except for the Mercury/EmArcy Jazz issues, which used the blue label as shown near left.
There are a number of known variations of the record jackets for the earliest stereo albums. For SR- 60001, for example, the earliest variation (far left) had a line beneath the banner, like the other early stereo issues, and the oval Mercury logo above the line. (The stereo releases from 1958 had this banner format in their original pressings.) There were also known variations where a silver "stereophonic" sticker was placed over the mono logo, especially in Canada (near left).
Later pressings went to the well-known white banner as shown near left, with a transition version shown far left with the mercury logo beneath the banner, and no line.
Early stereo releases came with an inner paper sleeve explaining the technical aspects of stereo on vinyl. |

Cross Reference of Early Stereo Releases with Mono Numbers: The first 24 stereo albums were announced in late 1958. The ones issued in 1958 had a stereo banner on top with a line underneath the banner. The oval Mercury logo was inside the banner. Reissues (or those of the 24 released later) had the later banner, with the Mercury logo below the banner and no white line.

the small print in the lower right of the back cover, which under the "Mercury Stereo" logo, begins,
"Mercury Electronically Created Stereo is the creation of...". Some later pressings of the stereo version
