Mercury began issuing 12-inch LPs in 1951, with a series of classical and otherwise high-brow
music. By 1952, they expanded this somewhat to include pop offerings, country, and jazz. Still, by the
end of 1952, Mercury had only released a total of about a dozen albums in the MG-20000 series. By far,
the most popular LP format was the 10-inch disc, which Mercury was churning out at well over 10 to 1
over the longer and more pricey 12-inch cousin.
By 1953, the format was not faring much better in sales. Of the 33 scheduled releases in 1953, from
MG-20011 to MG-20044 (one LP, MG-20038, had been issued already in 1951), only 14 were in fact
released, as the album market was still heavily oriented toward the 10-inch version. Eight more were
issued in 1954. In the 12-inch albums issued from 1951 to 1954, not many were duplicates of the 10-
inch albums, and those few that were, were usually combinations.
In 1955, this would all change. In the space of a single year, the 10-inch format almost completely lost
favor relative to the 12-inch LP, so that by the end of the year 12-inch albums were handily outselling
their former rival format. Mercury issued a slew of albums in 1955 to try to "catch up" and offer their
back catalog in the 12 song format that people now wanted. By the end of 1956, the 10-inch format was
essentially dead.
All of the albums listed on this page were initially released in monaural only, and all used the the same basic label design. Early issues had all gold print (far left), while later releases used all silver print (near left). A few issues used a transition label with "MERCURY" in silver and the rest of the print in gold. Stereo reissues from 1958-59 used the black label with the oval Mercury logo (see next page). |
