Richard Dyer-Bennet was folk singer from England who moved to the United States in 1925 and sang in New York night spots (including Carnegie Hall) in the 1940s, then recorded for several labels in the early 1950s (including Stinson, Keynote, Continental, Mercury, Concert Hall, Decca, Vox, and Remington). He established his own record label in 1955 (in association with Harvey Cort and recording engineer J. Gordon Holt) at his home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. The Dyer-Bennet label recorded folk and classical. The only artists on the label were Richard Dyer-Bennet and Aksel Schiøtz.

Richard Dyer-Bennet lost interest in recording music in the late 1960's and as a consequence, lost interest in the record label. After his death in 1991, the Smithsonian-Folkways label acquired the Dyer-Bennet recordings four years later with the exception of the Aksel Schiøtz material. All Richard Dyer-Bennet albums are available on CD from Smithsonian Folkways.

The albums were named with the sequence of releases starting with 1 and reaching 13. When the Dyer-Bennet records were released they appeared in the Schwann New Entry's section under the numbers DYB-1000 to DYB-9000. After DYB-9000, they appeared in the Schwann Catalogs as DYB-10, DYB-11, DYB-12 and DYB-13. We have used DYB-1, etc. as the basic series catalog numbers, with alternate numbers in parentheses.

One of the oddities of the Dyer-Bennet releases was that all the album labels were different, each one being a custom label for that particular album. We have captured most of them in the gallery below.

Stereo albums had the same label as the mono releases, but contained a small print notation on the cover that said, "This is a stereophonic recording" and a notation "(Stereophonic)" on the label.

Labels for albums 1-4.
Labels for albums 5-8.
Labels for albums 9, 10, 12, & X-2.
