Bob Keane (formerly Keene, Kuhn) formed Del-Fi Records in Los Angeles in 1957. His first single, "Caravan"/"September Song" by Henri Rose [Del-Fi 4101], released early in 1958, immediately drew the attention of Warner Bros, who bought his contract from Keane and provided enough working capitol for Keene to buy out his partner and run the company.

Ritchie Valens, 1958 Del-Fi's first successful artist was Ritchie Valens, whose "Come On, Let's Go" entered the national charts in September, 1958, reaching #42. But the followup [Del-Fi 4110], released in November, 1958, turned out to be a two-sided smash: "Donna" reached #2; the flip, "La Bamba," made #22 but has since become a classic. Unfortunately, Valens was killed in the plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly, J.P Richardson, and the pilot in the morning hours of February 3, 1959, while "Donna" was still in the top-10. Keane put out an instrumental soon after by Valens called "Fast Freight" under the thin pseudonym of "Arvee Allens" [Del-Fi 4111], but it didn't chart. Two additional Ritchie Valens records charted, "That's My Little Suzie" [Del-Fi 4114, #55] in April, and "Little Girl" [Del-Fi 4117, #92] in July, but Ritchie's career had just begun when it was snuffed out, and most of what Keane had left were unfinished masters. Valens, of course, has become a much more famous figure over the years than he was as a shy 17-year old.

Other notable singles in 1959 included "Cherrystone" by the Addrisi Brothers [Del-Fi 4116, 6/59, #62], who would become more famous as songwriters in the 1960s and as artists in the early 1970s. In September, Chan Romero's "Hippy Hippy Shake" went nowhere for the moment, but the song became a hit in 1964 when redone by the Swinging Blue Jeans, which brought new attention to the original.

Fifteen releases in 1960 passed without any top-100 chart action, although The Gallahads, a Seattle- based R&B group reached #111 with "Lonely Guy" [Del-Fi 4137]. The song had originally been issued on Donna 1322, but fared a bit better on the parent label. (This was a different Gallahads from the New Jersey outfit with Vincent Bell that hit #62 in 1956 with "The Fool".)

Johnny Crawford It wasn't until May, 1961, that Del-Fi had another hit: "Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You)" [Del-Fi 4158], which put Del-Fi back in the top-10 at #9. Followup singles "Hully Gully Again" [Del-Fi 4164, #54] and "Memories Of Those Oldies But Goodies" [Del-Fi 4166, #101] charted, but failed to repeat the group's initial success.

By June, 1961, Keane had signed the artist who would have the most hits for Del-Fi, young actor Johnny Crawford, co-star of the western television series The Rifleman. Crawford reeled off ten successive chart hits, including three straight top-20 hits in 1962: "Cindy's Birthday" [Del-Fi 4178, 5/62, #8], "Your Nose Is Gonna Grow" [Del-Fi 4181, 8/62, #14] and "Rumors" [Del-Fi 4188, 11/62, #12].

Also in 1962, Del-Fi signed Canadian singing star Bobby Curtola, who contributed minor hits with "Fortune Teller" [Del-Fi 4177, 5/62, #41] and "Aladdin" [Del-Fi 4185, 10/62, #92].

But it was in 1963 that Keane began signing the surf/car bands who would become the mainstay of the label, especially on the album side, for the next couple of years. That year brought the Lively Ones, the Sentinals, the Impacts, Bruce Johnston, the Surf Stompers, Dave Myers & the Surftones, the Romancers, the De-Fenders, the Darts, and the Deuce Coupes.

By 1964, the label was winding down, with only eleven singles released, none of which charted. 1965 was even leaner, with only four singles released before Keane decided to discontinue Del-Fi (and Donna) in favor of Mustang and Bronco.

The first Del-Fi singles design had "Del-Fi" at the top of the label, with no other graphics. This first label design was issued in several colors, including yellow, gold, green, and blue for various singles. It was replaced by fall, 1958, by the second design, shown below. This happened at least by 4106, "Come On, Let's Go" by Ritchie Valens, which had the second design (shown below).
By the time the series reached #4110, "Donna" by Ritchie Valens, the label design had long since changed to a light blue and black design (far left), with a series of circles. This label was used until about September, 1959. The single "Donna" was such a large seller that some of the old label stock (near left) was used to press singles. Changeover to the third design started around Del-Fi 4125 in September, 1959.
The third singles label (far left) was light blue with black print, with a Del-Fi logo at the top. Around the edge of the label was a sawtooth design. This label was used from September, 1959, until about the end of 1961, although later singles occasionally had this label as label blanks were used up. Several Ritchie Valens singles (e.g., 4128, 4133) were issued on a variation of this label with a gold label instead of light blue (near left) These had "LIMITED/Valens Memorial Series" under the logo, although the numbering was in the usual singles catalog series. Promotional labels for both of these variations were white with black print.
Three of the 45s in the "Valens Memorial Series" (4114, 4117, 4128) came with picture sleeves. The one illustrated at left is from 4117.
There were three EPs released on Del-Fi. At far left is the paper picture sleeve for the promotional-only Del-Fi PR-1, released in February, 1960. At near left is Del-Fi D-101 ("Ritchie Valens"), a commercially- released version of PR-1, which was issued in a Del-Fi company sleeve. DFEP-111 was "Ritchie Valens Sings", probably also issued in a regular sleeve, contained the songs "Bluebirds Over The Mountain/Come On, Let's Go/Hi-Tone/Donna".
The fourth singles label (far left) was black with silver print, with a light blue Del-Fi logo at the top. Around the edge of the label was a sawtooth design. Promotional copies of this design (near left) were white with black print, with "PROMOTION" above the logo. This design was used from the beginning of 1962 until Del-Fi went dormant in 1965.
In 1987, Del-Fi issued an updated version of "La Bamba" on both 45 and 12" EP. The 45 label (far left) was green with black print. The first Del-Fi album label (near left), was light blue with black print, the label print having been hand-lettered by a calligrapher. Around the edge of the label was a series of light blue circles on a black field, similar to the circles on the 45 label then being used. At the top of the label the circles were interrupted for the label name, which was in light blue. This label design was only used for the first album, DFLP-1201.
The second Del-Fi label design (far left), used for DFLP-1202 to DFLP-1210 from September until the end of 1959, was light blue with black print. Around the edge of the label was a light blue "sawtooth" design inside another, gold, sawtooth design. The third Del-Fi label (near left), used starting in 1960, was black with gold print, using generally the same design as the second label with the colors reversed. The light blue-on-black inner sawtooth ring had been reversed to black on a light blue field, making the overall design around the edge look like a series of diamonds.

The mono issues listed below had the prefix "DFLP-" and the stereo issues had the prefix "DFST-". Where we know stereo versions exist, we have listed both the mono and stereo numbers. For those whose numbers are only the mono listings, we know of no stereo issue.

Note: We believe the above album (DFLP/DFST-1249) was the last of the original Del-Fi releases in the 1960s. The album directly below was issued in 1987 to capitalize on the motion picture La Bamba. The following albums, issued starting in the 1990s on CD, continue the above numbering sequence. Del-Fi has also re-released many of the earlier LPs on CD (using Rhino's numbering system). An example of the numbering system is as follows: A Barrel of Oldies, originally DFLP-1219, becomes DFCD 71219-2 on CD. The CD reissues sometimes feature additional tracks not on the original vinyl.

DF-1287 - La Bamba '87 - Ritchie Valens [1987] 12" EP, with "updated" versions of the title song. La Bamba '87 (Long Version)/La Bamba '87 (Uno Vez Mas)//La Bamba '87 (Latino Power Mix)/La Bamba '87 (Hi-Tone Rock Box Mix)
