Fantasy Album Discography, Part 1:
10" Albums (1951-1955)

By David Edwards, Mike Callahan, Patrice Eyries, Randy Watts and Tim Neely
Last update: November 10, 2010

The first albums issued by Fantasy Records were 10-inch LPs in the 3-1 series. The ten-inch album was the most popular long playing format in 1951. The series continued until 1955; by that time the 10- inch format was losing sales to the 12-inch album, and most record companies (including Fantasy) discontinued the 10-inch LP in favor of the larger variety.

The first Fantasy label used for the 10-inch series (far left) was maroon with gold print. The label name was at the top, and "LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE" was bending around the bottom of the label. In early 1955, the label shifted to red with gold print (near left) with the same design. All the records in the 10-inch series may have been issued on red vinyl, but they were also issued in blue, green, or purple vinyl. We have listed the colors we have observed for the albums in the discography below. Later, the albums were reissued on black vinyl.
