Star Song Communications was founded in 1976 in the Houston area by Darrell Harris. In 1977, Star
Song's address was 910 E. Harris, Pasadena, Texas 77506. By 1982, it had moved to 2223 Strawberry,
Pasadena, Texas 77502, and by 1986, the address was 12929 Gulf Freeway, Suite 201, Houston, TX
77034. In all cases, it was listed as a Division of Jubilee Communications.
Early Star Song issues were distributed by Benson Records. When Star Song switched to Word for
distribution, the SPCN system for catalog numbers was used starting in 1983. Star Song's catalog
numbers switched from the 0001 series to the 710 2000 series. About 1987, Star Song's distribution
changed to Tempo Records, 1900 West 47th Place, Mission, Kansas 66205. Tempo changed the
numbering system agin, to the SSR-8000 series, starting with the same last two digit sequence of the
last of the 2000 series. Tempo reissued many of the Star Song back catalog albums with the new
SSR-8000 designations (for example, SSR- 0013 was reissued as SSR-8013, etc.)
In 1989, Star Song moved to Nashville. About 1994, the label was sold to EMI, and in 1976, was moved
to the Sparrow Records building (Sparrow was another Christian label under EMI). At that point, it
became entangled with Sparrow, rather than operating as an independent label. By 1998, EMI
announced that Star Song would be an imprint used only for special projects.
The original Star Song label was dark blue with cream colored print, with the Star Song Logo taking up
the upper left quarter of the label. By the early 1980s, the label was in full color, although the design
remained the same. After Word began distribution, there were some custom labels like the Farell and
Farrell album pictured above at right. When distribution changed to Tempo Records, the label design
changed to a grey color with tiny stars and a large multicolored star logo.
