ELEKTRA

The first Elektra label used for stereo singles was white with the black and red top (shown, top left). In June, 1968, they introduced a new design that was black on top and yellow (or gold) on the bottom (shown, center left). In October, 1970, they switched to a blue-grey label with the "caterpillar on a leaf" logo (shown, bottom left).

Promotional copies of the first (black and red top) label were black and white, with the red in the top replaced by white. The second (yellow/gold and black) label used a promotional label that was red with the same design (see right). The "caterpillar" label used a black and white label with the same design.

When Elektra started issuing stereo singles in February, 1968, they went all in. Every commercial single we have seen from EK-45629 to EK45668 was stereo (although we have not seen a commercial copy of EK-45643 to confirm stereo for that single). Generally, these stereo singles were issued with both mono and stereo promo copies.

Beginning in March, 1970, Elektra began issuing some mono-only singles. For the remainder of 1970, this included EKM-45669, EKM-45682-95, EKM-45701-07, and EKM-45711. Elektra continued to release both mono and stereo singles until 1972, when they went to stereo releases almost exclusively.

We have not seen a commercial copy of EKS-45697 to confirm it was stereo.

Elektra Notes:
1. Some copies of EK 45635 by the Doors have the A-side title as "Hello, I Love You, Won't You Tell Me Your Name?", while most copies just read "Hello, I Love You."
2. EK-45639, Judy Collins' "Both Sides Now," says stereo on the label, but all copies are flat mono, including the flip side.
