Creedence Oddball Stereo

Almost everyone knows that the Creedence Gold album was issued in CD-4 quadraphonic [Fantasy FPH-4001], and that the quad version of the album had a nicely separated mix of both "Proud Mary" and "Bad Moon Rising." A lesser known oddity is that some regular reissues of Creedence Gold also had a wider stereo mix of both songs, and that the wider stereo "Bad Moon Rising" actually showed up on a reissue 45.

These are not all that easy to find. The version of Creedence Gold with wider mixes can be identified first by the non-foldopen cover and teal colored label (the scan, which looks blue, is not exactly true to color; it's got slightly more green in it). The dead wax on side A says "(b-t) F-9418 A-G/A". The dead wax on side B says merely "F 9418 B", along with an initial or two.

The singles are a bit more problematic. The picture at left is the flip side of "Medley USA" [Fantasy 917], issued in 1981. Although the label clearly says "STEREO," the song is mono. The scan at right is a reissue of Fantasy 622 from about the same time. This label was used for both mono and stereo reissues, so you have to look at the dead wax. MONO versions say "F 622-B" and may have marks like a scratched out number and "T1" or "T111" in various places. The STEREO version also has these types of marks, but also has the following written on it: "FS1-1780DT AMPCRPTH#1".

The stereo version of "Bad Moon Rising" on the regular reissue of the LP pictured above, and the stereo version on the reissue single are identical. The song starts out with some hiss and what sounds like a doubled vocal. To my recall, the quad LP does not have the doubled vocal effect.
