Hollywood Album Discography

Oddly enough, this particular Hollywood label (there have been several others) was located in New York City. It was part of Paramount Enterprises, 383 Concord Avenue in New York. The president of the label was Benjamin Lowe. The label issued pop, classical, and children's records (through the Hollywood/Robin Hood label). It was affiliated with the Hallmark label. It also apparently received favor with the Saturday Evening Post, since the albums prominently displayed a Post emblem as a "recognized value." We are not sure if this was an actual award or it just meant that Hollywood Records (or Hallmark) was a regular advertiser in the Post. Their yellow budget sticker ("label may be removed") notes that the album, now $1.49 instead of $3.98, is "as advertised" in the Post.

As did many of the budget labels of the 1950s, Hollywood started off with fourteen albums of different genres for an initial offering. The gereric working titles for these albums — Religious Hymns, Polka Party, Dixieland Jazz, Rock & Roll, Easy Listening #1, Easy Listening #2, Showboat Medlies (Banjo), Romantic Moods, Music for Everyone, Jazz and Swing, Viennese Waltzes, Tunes for Tots, Broadway Show Tunes, and Mostly Strings — indicate that it was all here. In fact, although the covers were designed with particular titles, many of the record labels still retained the generic working titles of the albums, for example, Easy Listening No. 2 on the label for LPH-6, which was titled Dreamy Afternoon on the jacket.

Gateway label Most of the first dozen albums and several others came from material from Carl Burkhardt's Gateway/Kentucky/4 Hits labels, with offices and recording studios in Cincinnati. Burkhardt's labels specialized in cheap knock-offs of hits, but also recorded original material. Many of the artists had already released records on the Gateway and related labels, including the Peterson Family Choir (LPH-1), Chuck Farone and the Polka Larks (LPH-2), the Hot Rod Six Plus Two (LPH-3), the Lindsey Powers Combo (LPH-4), the Roy-Cliffs (LPH-5 and LPH-6), the Banjo Hot Shots (LPH-7), Herbie Layne (LPH-9 and LPH-13), Michael Lehman ("Michel René") Orchestra (LPH-11), Delbert Barker (LPH-18), Sonny Osborne & His Sunny Mountain Boys (LPH-19), Jack Daniels (LPH-22) and Piano Willie (LPH-27).

Back cover shows no label nameHollywood reissue LPHep LPGateway LP Many, if not all, of the albums from Gateway were apparently originally issued on the Gateway label itself, in addition to other labels like Hep Records and Variety Records, with the same covers and numbers. Burkhardt made it easy to reissue the records on different labels, since the Gateway covers were quite generic, with a generic logo that just said "An Ultra High Fidelity Record" on a black circle with two horizontal stripes. When Hollywood Records reissued the albums, they first used the generic covers also, but then reissued the albums with new cover art with high quality full color photos for the cover art. Hollywood also often changed the names of the artists when they changed cover art, so we have several cases where the exact same album is credited to two different artists' names.

The revised album cover art is mostly a series of photos with studio models, sometimes including recognized Hollywood actors and actresses. It is interesting to note that although different female models were used (or at least their hair was different) for the different albums, the male model was often the same (compare LPH-121 through LPH-124, for example). Hollywood Records did not last much past 1959, when they began selling off their assets.

The first Hollywood label was usually dark red with silver print (far left), but had several color variations, including other shades of red and maroon-to brown (near left). There was a thin ring about a quarter of the way from the outer edge of the label to the center hole. Outside the ring, "HOLLYWOOD RECORDS" was at the top and "long play 33 1/3 rpm" on the bottom.

Later, the label changed somewhat (far left), with the ring gone and the writing at the bottom now including a silver disc and a different font. Near the end of their life, the later Hollywood label (near left) had just the label name in block letters at the top.

The Gateway label (far left) was black with silver print. This same label style was used for the Hep label (discussed in the story above). The Variety label (near left) was black with silver print, and "Variety" replaced "Hollywood" on the front cover. We believe that this particular Variety label (there were several) was operating out of Chicago in the mid-to-late 1950s.

Sound of the 'National Philharmonic Orchestra' has the typical quality of Russian recordings of over a decade ago. Other low-price merchandise now available has superior features. Sexy cover might attract some before auditioning."

LPH-102 - Sleeping Beauty Ballet - National Philharmonic Orchestra Conducted by Malcolm Thomas [5/57]

LPH-103 - One Hour of the Best of the Ballet - National Philharmonic Orchestra Conducted by Malcolm Thomas [5/57] Billboard's review on May 20, 1957 (Page 119): "Another example of third-rate, second hand recording of first-line material. Perpetrators remain anonymous on label [but identified on generic back of record jackets]. The $1.49 price will sell this in some outlets, but regular disk shops should beware." Sleeping Beauty Ballet/Masquerade Suite/Faust Ballet/Mignon Ballet Fantasy/Scheherazade
