The X1000 series of extended play 45s was the main series of EPs for MGM after about 1952. MGM issued an astonishing 700+ EPs in this series alone. Most were songs which were culled from a 10-inch or 12-inch album released concurrently, and had the same names as the larger albums. Typically, they had cardboard covers like their larger counterparts, but had different cover artwork (often different poses from the same photo shoot). By 1956, MGM would usually offer a 12-inch LP, along with three individual EPs using the same title, but with "Volume 1, " "Volume 2," and "Volume 3" for the different Eps. Each EP would have four songs, and the three volumes together would contain the 12 songs on the larger LP.

EPs were sometimes packaged in two or three EP sets in a fold-open "album" arrangement with pockets for each individual EP These are covered in Parts 18 and 20 of the discography.

Some of the EPs issued in the late 1950s were issued in stereo. These were designated with the prefix "SX-" instead of the regular prefix "X-" used for mono releases. These are noted by the "SX-" prefix in the discography below.
