Mercury's MG-25000 series was the label's foray into the most popular long playing format of the
late 1940s and early 1950s, the 10-inch, 33-1/3 rpm album. Most of the time these discs featured four
songs on each side, but occasionally albums were issued with three or even five songs on a side. The
"MG" prefix was short for "microgroove." By 1955, the record-buying public had shown a clear
preference for the 12-inch album, and the MG-25000 series was discontinued after more than 200
issues. (Mercury again used the 25000 series, this time with an "MGH" prefix, for the mid-1960s oldies
Original Golden Hits series.)
The earliest label on the Mercury 10 inch series (far left) was black with gold print, with "MERCURY" around the top edge of the label. Around the lower edge of the label it read, "LONG PLAYING MICROGROOVE" with a small drawing of the head of Mercury at the very bottom. There was a transition label with the "MERCURY" in silver and the rest in gold that was used around 25050, then later issues (near left) were black with all silver print, with the same design. Issues in 1949 and1950 had paper sleeves with a flap on the side that could be closed after the record was inserted. Starting in 1951, issues had standard cardboard jackets. |
