The Liberty Premier Series started as a special "high quality" [read: snooty] pop series with gold labels and heavy cardboard fold-open record jackets, often with see-through sculpted cutout covers. Label propaganda noted, "The Premier Series is a new concept in recorded entertainment, each album being a complete production, specially conceived and carefully planned to please the most discriminating record collector. The talents of only the finest performers and technicians [read: no rock and roll allowed here] are called upon for these albums. And, each album comes carefully sealed in a specially designed package worthy of the superb product within."

"Highbrow" artists such as Felix Slatkin, Bessie Griffin, Richard Marino, Si Zentner, and Tommy Garrett were featured in the first few albums in something called "Poly 120 Sound." Before long, however, the label became a vehicle for Tommy Garrett's "50 Guitars" albums almost exclusively. Surprisingly, the label lasted nine years, thanks to Garrett's ability to sell lots of albums of "background music," a precursor to the "lounge music" phenomenon of the 1990s.

The Premier Series used the LMM-12000/LSS-14000 series for mono and stereo, respectively. The label was gold with black print. Graphics were similar to the regular Liberty label, except there was no color, so the rainbow at the left of the label was made up of horizontal black lines.
