Ace was the first local label of note in New Orleans, even though it was operated out of Jackson Mississippi, 196 miles away. Prior to the establishment of Ace, large independent labels from other regions recorded occasionally in New Orleans. The most successful of these were Los Angeles-based Imperial (with Fats Domino) and Specialty (with Lloyd Price and Little Richard). Ace was formed by Johnny Vincent in August 1955. Vincent was previously a salesman, then a producer for Specialty Records. Almost all of the Ace recordings were made at Cosimo Matassa's studio in New Orleans until the 1970s, when Vincent sometimes used Malaco Studios located locally in Jackson.

Ace enjoyed several national hits in the late 1950s, such as Huey "Piano" Smith's "Rockin' Pneumonia & Boogie Woogie Flu," a series of Jimmy Clanton hits, and Frankie Ford's "Sea Cruise," but by 1962, Ace's fortunes were on the wane. Vincent tried to get better distribution of his product by signing a five year distribution deal with the much larger Vee-Jay Records in Chicago. Ace was to be maintained as a separate label with Jimmy Clanton, Frankie Ford and Huey Smith as artists, and Vincent was also to produce for Vee-Jay. This marriage produced only one hit of note, Jimmy Clanton's "Venus In Blue Jeans." Within months of the signing of the deal, Vee-Jay was beset by their own problems, and Vee-Jay essentially collapsed in 1965. Ace became a small regional label with the release of a few more records, but soon Johnny Vincent gave up the record business in favor of other interests.

Because of intense interest in the Ace Label by record collectors and music historians, Vincent reactivated the label in 1971 to produce some new music and reissue the treasures from the label's vault. He recalls carrying the two-track master tape of "Sea Cruise" around in the trunk of his car and using the music track for a new recording of the song by Little Shelton in 1971. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Vincent kept the label alive by reissuing old material along with a few new recordings, and by leasing the masters to other labels (notably Ace Records UK).

When I saw Johnny Vincent in 1996, he was in failing health, but still running the Ace label out of a small warehouse-like storefront in a row of industrial units in Jackson. When you walked in, there was a small receptionist desk where you could often find Johnny himself. He had told me in 1980 that if he could just get one more #1 record, he could die happy. When I saw him in 1996, he was still trying, recording new music for CD releases using his studio in the back.

In 1997, Vincent sold the label to Music Collection International, a British label, and producer Bob Fisher began mining the catalog for CD release on his Westside label. MCI's US label was Music Club, which issued some CDs with the Ace material. Johnny Vincent died February 4, 2000.

Teem was a budget label subsidiary, and is covered on a separate page.

The Ace LP-1000 series LPs are all mono to our knowledge, with a single exception: the Gil Peterson album (Ace 1024) was issued in stereo with a bar across the cover stating "STEREOPHONIC." Some stereo did emerge in the reissues of the past decade or so, but the only real hits to be issued in stereo were Jimmy Clanton's "Go Jimmy Go" and "Another Sleepless Night," which appeared in stereo on the 1992 CD The Best of Ace Records: The Pop Hits [Scotti Bros. 72392 75266-2].

The first Ace LP label, used for LP-1001 and possibly 1002-3, was dark green (far left) with silver print. Most of the other albums in the LP-1000 series used a black label (near left) with silver print.
For LP-1007 (far left) and LP-1008 (near left), Ace used special custom labels showing Jimmy Clanton. These labels were also used in the two-LP set DLP-100.
For a time in 1960, and then again in 1962 when distributed by Vee-Jay, Ace used a blue, black and white label with "Ace" at the top (far left). The 2000 Collectors Series that started in 1971 used a label design as shown at near left. These labels are known in yellow, red, or white backgrounds.
