Dot Album Discography, Part 1:
10-inch LPs and 7-inch EPs
By David Edwards and Mike Callahan
Last update: May 6, 2003

The 10" LP format was popular in the early and mid-1950s, but became less popular as the 12" LP took over. Like most record companies of the time, Dot issued 10" LPs until about 1955, when the bottom dropped out of 10" LP sales. The 7" extended play 45 rpm record was popular in the late 1950s, but by the early 1960s was dead. The stereo single lifetime lasted even shorter time. It began in early 1959 and was over by mid-1960.

The label on the 10 inch record series was maroon with silver printing. "Dot" in silver script above the center hole, "LONG 33 1/3 PLAY" and "DOT RECORDS, INC. * GALLATIN, TENNESSEE" at the bottom of the label. The Dot 100 series were issued as 10 inch records initially, although at least one, the Eddie Peabody DLP-110, was reissued as a 12 inch record with a number of songs added, but keeping the same catalog number.

Dot 200 Stereo Single Series:

The stereo single series started as a result of the introduction of stereo on record commercially in 1958. After the feasibility of stereo on vinyl was demonstrated in November, 1957 (it had existed on reel-to-reel tape for some years before this), the major labels geared up and issued the first stereo albums in the summer of 1958. A few months later, many of the majors announced that they would also be making singles available in stereo. By spring, 1959, many labels were issuing their hits in stereo as well as mono. Since this was an expense to issue stereo singles, most waited to see which releases would be hits before issuing the stereo singles, so the issue dates were somewhat later. Dot used the 200 series to issue stereo singles. The usual black label was used, with a "stereophonic" notation. In the discography below, the corresponding mono single numbers are given in brackets. The first Dot stereo single was issued in early 1959.
