Columbia Main Series, Part 24:
CL 2800-2899/CS 9600-9699 (1968)

By Randy Watts, Mike Callahan, David Edwards, and Patrice Eyries
Last update: November 9, 2015

For most of 1968, Columbia released their albums in stereo only, although they made mono pressings available to radio stations in some cases. But until 1969, this was not a hard-and-fast rule. They made exceptions for some of their most popular artists, pressing both mono and stereo commercial copies. The mono copies were pressed in small numbers and sold out to the mono fans quickly, so after a few months, for all intents and purposes, they all were "stereo only." Today, these late mono issues are difficult to find and some are quite rare.

On the other hand, mono lasted in the UK much longer than in the US — well into the 1970s. Most Columbia albums were also issued on CBS in the UK, and many of the later albums in mono can be found there.

About January, 1968, the stereo banner changed temporarily from "Stereo 360 Sound" to a longer "Columbia Stereo" banner that also said "can be played on most modern mono equipment" (see above right).

But soon after, sometime during February, 1968, the upper-left logo that had been used for years (near right) was replaced by a more compact logo (center right) that incorporated not only the "stereo" notation, but also contained the statement that the record "can also be played on mono equipment." Gone were the stereo banners altogether. Also gone was the big banner for electronically rechanneled stereo. This was replaced by a tiny statement (far right) where "electronically rechanneled for stereo" replaced "stereo" in the new logo. Not exactly an easily-seen notice, but they figured since there were no longer any mono choices, you get what you get.

The few commercial mono releases on this page used the "two eye" label with "MONO" in white lettering near the bottom (far left). The stereo label was similar, but the white lettering near the bottom said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the white legend at the bottom (near left).
Although most commercial releases on this (and the next) page were stereo only, quite a few albums were provided in mono to radio stations only. These had white labels with black print in the same design as the commercial mono releases of the time (far left). Curiously, they used the stereo CS-96xx numbers instead of CL-28xx mono numbers. These radio station albums would typically have a sticker on the front of the jacket noting they were special radio station records (near left).
