Columbia Main Series, Part 23:
CL 2700-2799/CS 9500-9599 (1967-1968)

By Randy Watts, Mike Callahan, David Edwards, and Patrice Eyries
Last update: November 7, 2015

This page covers the start of the transition to "stereo only" album releases. In February, 1968, Columbia started releasing albums in "compatible stereo," with no commercial mono releases. For a short time (a number of months), Columbia did ship mono versions of some albums to radio stations, but this practice was discontinued within about a year.

Compatible stereo/mono records had been an industry goal — and controversy — since the stereo record was introduced in 1957. At that time, mono grooves had horizontal "wiggles" that allowed the sound to be reproduced, and the cartridge that held the stylus was not built to allow vertical movement. When stereo came in, the groove was set up to allow one channel to be on each side of the groove, which demanded that the cartridges have both horizontal and vertical movement. For that reason, playing a stereo record on a mono machine back in the 1950s resulted in damage (shearing off some of the little peaks in the grooves) to the stereo record. This incompatibility was a major problem, but mono cartridges were soon introduced that allowed vertical movement, minimizing the damage to the stereo records. By 1967, fully 10 years later, most of the old mono cartridges were out of the system, and stereo records could safely be played "on most modern mono machines."

That wasn't the only problem with compatibility, however. When a stereo record was played on a mono machine, the mathematical "a+b" algorithm where the two sides were added resulted in about a 3% volume increase for things that were on both channels (i.e., things "in the middle.") This was less a hardware problem, and more of a sound problem. This problem also had to be overcome before stereo records were truly compatible. The industry started working on this issue in earnest starting in early 1966, and by the end of 1967, it was felt that the sound of a stereo record played on a mono machine was sufficiently similar that mono records could be discontinued.

Like most things Columbia did, the changeover didn't come all at once. Although Columbia started issuing "stereo-only" releases in February, 1968, they didn't completely discontinue coupled commercial mono/stereo issues until the end of 1968. Even then, some later records were issued in mono-only due to unavailability of stereo recordings.

The mono releases on this page used the "two eye" label with "MONO" in white lettering near the bottom (far left). The stereo label was similar, but the white lettering near the bottom said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the white legend at the bottom (near left).
Most promo copies at this time used the regular red labels, with a timing strip on the front cover (far left), a stamp on the back cover, and the regular label inside. When Columbia went to stereo-only releases, some mono promo copies were provided to radio stations with a white label (near left) that used the stereo number but said "MONO" on the bottom.
