Hollywood Album Discography

Oddly enough, this particular Hollywood label (there have been several others) was located in New York City. It was part of Paramount Enterprises, 383 Concord Avenue in New York. The president of the label was Benjamin Lowe. The label issued pop, classical, and children's records (through the Hollywood/Robin Hood label). It was affiliated with the Hallmark label. It also apparently received favor with the Saturday Evening Post, since the albums prominently displayed a Post emblem as a "recognized value." We are not sure if this was an actual award or it just meant that Hollywood Records (or Hallmark) was a regular advertiser in the Post. Their yellow budget sticker ("label may be removed") notes that the album, now $1.49 instead of $3.98, is "as advertised" in the Post.

As did many of the budget labels of the 1950s, Hollywood started off with about a dozen albums of different genres for an initial offering. Hymns, Polka, Dixieland, Rock & Roll, Easy Listening, Banjos, Jazz, Big Bands, Childrens music - it was all here. In fact, although the covers were designed with particular titles, at least some of the record labels still retained the working titles of the albums, like "Easy Listening No. 2" for LPH-6, which was titled Dreamy Afternoon on the jacket.

The first dozen or so albums were apparently issued with drawings on the cover (see yellow cover for LPH-10, for example), and then reissued with photos as part of the cover art. Since the albums used pseudonyms for the generic artists, there was also no compunction about changing the names of the artists when they changed cover art, so we have several cases where the exact same album is credited to two different artists' names.

The revised album cover art is mostly a series of photos with studio models, sometimes including recognized Hollywood actors and actresses. It is interesting to note that although different female models were used (or at least their hair was different) for the different albums, the male model was often the same (compare LPH-121 through LPH-124, for example). Hollywood Records did not last much past 1960.

The Hollywood label was a typical 1950s budget label, specializing in generic pop music and seductive women in their cover art. The label was dark red with silver print. At least some of the issues, for example LPH-6, pictured at left, were also issued with the same cover graphics, but on the Variety label (in this case, Variety LPH-6). The label was black with silver print, and "Variety" replaced "Hollywood" on the front cover. We believe that this particular Variety label (there were several) was operating out of Chicago in the late 1950s.
