Colpix Album Discography, Part 1
(SCP-400 Popular Music Series)

By David Edwards and Mike Callahan Last update: October 31, 2005

The first Colpix label was gold with black printing, with "COLPIX" in red curving around the top of the label. Stereo issues used the same label, but with large "STEREO" in italics to the right of the center hole. Second label was gold with black printing; above the center hole was a piece of movie film with the words "COLPIX RECORDS" in black on a white background. Stereo issues used the same label. Third label was light blue with black printing, above the center hole is a piece of movie film with the words "COLPIX RECORDS" in black on a light blue background. Stereo issues on this light blue label have often proved to be in fact mono, even if the album was released in true stereo previously. There is also a fourth label, dark blue with silver printing, above the center hole is" COLPIX RECORDS" on two lines in silver, this label may only have been used on stereo issues around 1966. Stereo issues carried a SCP prefix instead of the CP prefix on monaural issues. Those LPs which are known to have been issued in mono and stereo are listed with a both prefixes. Those known to be mono only are listed with a mono prefix. Where we don't know if stereo was issued, we have used an asterisk (*) in the prefix: "*CP-".

There are some significant variations in the Colpix font on the gold label. The word "Colpix" in large red letters appears in both "block lettering" (where the "C",for example, is squared off at the end) and "pointed lettering" that is not squared off. We do not know if this distinction is related to the sequence of pressings ("square" being earlier than "pointed", for example) or whether it is simply related to the use of different printing companies who produced what they thought were identical labels. We would appreciate any information on this.
